Honoring a Legacy of Compassion: The Story of Lindsey McDonald’s Volunteer Journey
Lindsey McDonald began her volunteer work with Goodness Village in August 2023, driven by a deeply personal experience that shaped her mission to give back. Inspired by the challenges she faced while caring for her mother who battled myeloid leukemia, Lindsey sought a way to honor her mother’s generous heart and extend support to those enduring similar struggles.
“My mom Kristy Carroll, had myeloid leukemia and spent time in Houston, and my sister and I took turns staying with her for over 200 nights in a medical RV village 30 minutes away,” Lindsey shares. “I wanted to honor her. She had such a generous heart, and I knew I could relate to the caregivers who were facing the same kind of emotional and physical toll. I heard Kim Burket speak at our church (Little Rock Church), about what others were going through, and it really reminded me of how I felt when my mom was sick. I wanted to give back.”
Since then, volunteering at Goodness Village has become an essential part of Lindsey’s life. As a core volunteer, she has not only grown close to the team of volunteers, but also forged deep connections with the guests she serves. “It’s really fun to work with the team of volunteers, but the guests are my favorite part,” Lindsey says. “I’ve made so many friends through volunteering, and I just love seeing the difference we can make in their lives.”
For those considering volunteering, Lindsey offers this heartfelt advice: “Just do it! Even on busy days or days that feel too tough, it’s those moments when I realize that I’m the one being blessed. If you want to get involved but aren’t sure how, know that we always need volunteers, and we can use your unique talents.”
One memorable experience that has stayed with Lindsey was with a guest named Jazz. On his birthday, despite being very sick, she showed up with a cake and birthday hats. His emotional response left a lasting impression on her. “Jazz cried, and then his sister cried,” Lindsey remembers. “She thanked us for showing love to her brother. It really meant a lot to her, and that’s what volunteering is all about—making an impact on someone’s life when they need it most.”
Another unforgettable guest was Dia Fritz, who would share her unwavering faith while caring for her son, Jacob, during his battle with cancer. “Dia would always quote scripture and talk about the ways the Lord was blessing them. Her strength and faith were inspiring, and it was such a privilege to witness her journey,” Lindsey recalls. “Jacob is now cancer-free, and their story is one that really stuck with me.”
What makes volunteering at Goodness Village particularly special to Lindsey is the time she spends with the patients, and especially the caregivers. “My favorite part is visiting the patients and praying with them,” she explains. “They always offer to have me stay for dinner. I can really empathize with the caregivers because I understand how isolating it can be. They are often left alone while their loved ones rest and recover, so they appreciate having someone come by to talk with them.”
Lindsey’s commitment is not measured solely in hours—she dedicates one to two hours a week, but it is the connection she builds with the guests that truly defines her service. “I bring a goodie bag when I arrive and always check in with a text,” she says. “I’ll suggest a few of my favorite local restaurants, like Shotgun Dan’s, and sometimes I even bring dinner. I try to connect with my guests, take dinner at least once a week, and always ask if there’s anything else they need. I treat all my guests the same way, whether they stay for one week or two months, offering them as much love and compassion as possible.”
Volunteering at Goodness Village has become a family affair for Lindsey, with her children joining her in making a difference. “One of my favorite unexpected parts of volunteering is seeing my family get involved,” she says. “My son, Mason, dressed as a New York Yankee baseball player for Halloween, and one of the guests was so thrilled to see him. They talked baseball for over an hour, and his wife said that was the best he had felt in weeks. It was such a joy to see my son brighten someone’s day.”

While Lindsey is deeply moved by the positive impact on guests, she also has a great appreciation for the staff at Goodness Village. “Suzanne has made a huge impact on me,” she shares. “She works so hard to coordinate with all the volunteer groups and make sure that the guests receive treats and gifts. She’s always planning something special for them, and she ensures they feel loved and appreciated. Suzanne is truly exceptional at what she does.”
Through her time at Goodness Village, Lindsey has found a renewed passion for volunteering. “We are all so blessed, and everyone has something they can give,” she reflects. “My mom always taught me that we can all give back in some way. She left a legacy of supporting those around us, and I’m proud to carry that forward.”
The biggest reward Lindsey finds in her volunteering is the chance to honor her mother’s memory. “The biggest reward is knowing I’m honoring my mom,” she says. “It feels like a small gesture at times, but I know it has a big impact. The guests we serve are often at the lowest points in their lives, and we offer them hope. That means so much.”
As for her future with Goodness Village, Lindsey is committed to continuing her volunteer work because of the lasting impact it has on those she serves. “The guests are always so thankful, and many ask if I get paid for volunteering,” she says with a smile. “I tell them, ‘By the Lord.’ Seeing the difference we make in their lives is so rewarding, and I know that what we’re doing truly matters.”
Lindsey’s story is a beautiful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a profound impact. Through her service, she is not only honoring her mother’s legacy but also making a tangible difference in the lives of those facing the hardest challenges of their lives.
